Early detection is the best defense against breast cancer and an annual mammogram is the most effective breast cancer screening method today. At St. Luke's Hospital our goal is to find more cancers at an earlier stage, helping our patients live longer and healthier lives.
Early Detection Saves Lives
According to the American Cancer Society, women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram and clinical breast examination annually. Women 20 and older should perform monthly breast self-examination. The combination of monthly breast self-examination with annual mammography is the most effective breast cancer screening method today.
At St. Luke's Hospital, standard mammography images are re-checked with R2 Technology's ImageChecker®, a computer aided detection system. ImageChecker® acts as a second pair of eyes for physicians, identifying areas of concern on mammography. Using ImageChecker®, the radiologist is able to find over 20% more cancers at an earlier stage than by reading mammography images alone.
